First of all thanks for this site!! It's really helpful to read about my choices before i plop down money (and time) into wii fit games.

question--what games do you think are the best to work out with kids? As much as I love ur #1 choice (ea sports) for myself, it just doesn't hold my 7 and 10 years olds attention.

The kids are crazy about video games, so I figure getting a Wii was a good way to "trick" them into getting exercise! But i don't want to waste money on a game they'll get bored with. Also, I want something where i can get some exercise with them too!

thanx in advance!!

Hey mjb,

My pleasure

The first thing you should do is ask your kids whether they play Wii in their gym class. My nieces told me that their school started to use Dance Dance Revolution in gym class (oh, how I wish they had that when I was going to school--I was always the kid who got picked last, if they could only see me now with my mad DDR skills :P)

If the answer is yes, that's the perfect game. Why? Because not only can you play together (it's great fun when you have two dance pads), it'll also give them practice so they can impress their friends and have "bragging rights" in gym.

IMO, a better game for kids (but not one used in a lot of gym classes) is Active Life Explorer. It's another fun one to play with the family, and a few of the games really do get the heart pumping (although granted you have to play them several times to get the full effect). There's another in the Active Life Magic Carnival which should be a lot of fun. And of course, Active Life Outdoor Challenge is an all-time classic.

A fantastic game for younger kids is Nickelodeon Fit. If they watch Dora or Diego or Ni Hao Kai Lan, it'll really engage them. If your child does whatever Dora tells him or her to do while you're watching TV, it'll give them the thrill of a lifetime to actually hear Dora really respond to their actions

I haven't had a chance to review Just Dance Kids yet, but the word on the street is that it's now bad, but geared much more for younger kids (think "Kidz Bop" singing). For older kids, they'll enjoy the regular Just Dance or Just Dance 2.

And oldie but still a goodie is We Cheer 2. This is especially good for younger girls who may be interested in trying out for a cheerleading or dance team in the future.

There are a lot of really awful games littering the landscape, such as Kit Fit Island Resort, Family Party Fitness Fun and Get Moving Family Fitness. A lot of these companies seem to think that just putting the word "family" in a title will make up for a lackluster game. Avoid these like the plague.

Those are my top picks. Would love to hear if anyone else has any suggestions!

A game I found surprisingly good for fitness is Wii Motion Party. The game "spooky search" will have the kids waving their arms all around the room, and "veggie garden" will have them smacking those moles like crazy. Not a "fitness game" per se, but definitely one which will get the little ones moving!

Parents, who feel that your kid may develop an aggressive and a violent nature, think about Wii games which could be fun while playing. Read out this article, listed some of the best WII games for kids that would also provide full-time entertainment to your child.
